Acting as if the debut album still meant something in the post-mixtape anything-goes world (thanks Internet!), Maryland rapper Logic set himself up for something big after his crafted and beloved series of Young Sinatra mixtapes, but he could have called them Young Beatles. Those right-clickable freebies were like Please Please Me, while this mature entrance on Def Jam is his Rubber Soul turning into Revolver, offering a conceptual, Good Kid, M.A.A.D City-like journey through Logic's sad past, but adding to the mix Drake-sized charisma along with some innocent kid wit. "Metropolis" goes "Just left a hotel in Belgium, and their waffles was insane" with wide-eyed flair, chuckling and kicking it in stark contrast to Logic's admission elsewhere that selling crack rock to Dad was a low point for this now 24-year-old man. Family problems, addiction, and poverty are always knocking at Under Pressure's bedroom door, but the bedroom walls are lined with pictures of hip-hop heroes of all sorts, as "Bounce" finds the joy and creative outlet in a genre that goes "from Project Pat to Dilla." Phone messages from family weave in and out of the album, some of them now sober and asking the rapper to stop speaking of the past, but like the posters on the wall, they're just influences and milestones, as this feature-less album is filled to the brim with Logic, because with such insight, charm, honesty, and outlook, it absolutely should be. Likewise, "Under Pressure" is almost ten minutes long because that's what such a complex track deserves, embracing how the rapper's upswinging life is all tangles and contrasts, from a sister dealing with a post-rape life along with kids who hate her, and all while Logic is in danger of morphing into a fame-fed hypebeast ("I know that birthday, I missed it/I swear I told my assistant, but.."). Producer 6ix offers up fresh R&B ("Soul Food") and A$AP Mob-ish dream sequences ("Gang Related") while Logic goes whiz kid with his production on the pop-tacu

Debut Albums are always crucial. It's a first impression, that really shows what you are capable of. You look at rappers like Kanye West with his incredible "College Dropout", Jay-Z with his debut "Reasonable Doubt" and even the more recent "G.o.o.d Kid m.A.A.d City" by Kendrick Lamar. All of these albums have set up what is and could be incredible careers for these rappers. Under Pressure by Logic absolutely has the potential to reach some of these highs. Logic has proven himself as a fantastic lyricist, and shown that his music can speak for itself instead of having to rely on gimmicky sounds and weird features. One thing that is immediately noticeable when looking through this album is that, in the standard version of the album, there isn't a single guest feature. Childish Gambino and Big Sean are found on the deluxe edition, but those are just bonus tracks from his cancelled debut EP "While You Wait". Logic proves himself through these first 12 tracks how capable of holding down tracks as he is. Looking at the lead single from the album, also the title track "Under Pressure" the first three minutes are an unstoppable force of nothing but pure lyricism, and one of the most well-produced tracks of the last five years. The latter six minutes slows it down to tell a story about his father, which was kind of strange, knowing how powerful the first three minutes were, but it works overall. Before the release, this album earned comparisons to albums like Kanye West's "Graduation" and Kendrick Lamar's "G.o.o.d Kid m.A.A.d City". Which is well deserved, while Kanye's "Late Registration" would have been a more appropriate comparison, the 'G.o.o.d kid' comparison was spot on. The songs "Never Enough" and "I'm Gone" almost sound as if they were taken right out of that album, even down to the flow and the beat. They're nearly indistinguishable from the Kendrick album which might be one slight downside to the album. There are some minor points where originality isn't quite what it should be, but even then it's not long before we get back to songs that would fit nowhere else but on this album such as "Nikki" and "Bounce".Towards the beginning of the album we don't get any extremely hard hitters, but we do get some very solid songs that introduce the second half of the album well. "Soul Food" is separated into two different sections, though neither section outshines the other. Lyrically getting down to some personal stuff; "My other sister went back to her old dude, he's whooping her *** I'll kill him I'll kill him I really want to kill him, but I can't". It's refreshing to see a new artist actually talking about personal things instead of going to strip clubs and stacking their money.Looking at the Deluxe Edition tracks, it was mostly unneeded. "Driving Ms. Daisy" might be one of the best tracks of the year, as the production is top-notch and both Logic and Gambino kill their verses. It's disappointing to see that one wasn't a part of the standard edition, though it makes sense it didn't make it with the Gambino feature. "Now" and "Alright" are solid tracks in their own right, but they don't fit the flow of the album incredibly well, justifying the fact that they should just be Deluxe Edition tracks."Under Pressure" is without a doubt the best album we've seen in 2014. Nowhere does the project get boring, and only rarely does it make minor missteps. It isn't perfect, but it's the closest we've seen all year.FINAL SCORE: 9/10Must Have Songs:- Under Pressure- Driving Ms. Daisy- Nikki- Soul Food- Bounce- Buried Alive
